The Salic Law, a collection of laws of the Salian Franks, is one of the oldest records of Germanic customary law. The large text, in Latin, is essentially a penal code that determines the fines for various offenses under the different cases. In the Middle Ages the bishop performed functions of a public nature, such as the administration of justice, which explains the presence of the famous manuscript in the Archives of Chapter Modena. Written since the fifth century, the Salian Lex was amended and supplemented by Charlemagne and his successors, and found wide application in the Empire and in Italy. Tradition says that from this set of rules derived the principle of women exclusion from succession to the throne. Facsimile edition, edited by Franca Baldelli, commissioned by Capitular archive of Modena, sponsored by Fondazione Cassa di Modena to protect the ancient relic and be able to respond to numerous requests for loan and study, is printed on special paper in only 10 copies, not for sale. Code and commentary are kept in a special box.
