I Gonzaga Capitani
a family and a city in the Middle Ages

The government of the five captains in Mantua lasted more than one century and it was fundamental for the family to build a brighter and more important power over the town. The path of the Gonzaga to power is analysed and described from the political and institutional point of view, paying at the same time attention to military aspects, familiar feuds, astrological and esoteric elements, art and spectacularity that, in particular, were at that time conceived as instruments of political promotion.
A whole chapter is dedicated to the beheading of Agnese Visconti, a political crime that still cries out for vengeance. Another section is dedicated to heraldic themes and to the analysis of coats of arms and privileges, whereas the study of symbols of the city quarter testifies the evolution of town.
A special attention is dedicated to the Universitas Mercatorum Mantuae and to the history of consuls, main source that can be used to understand the dynamics of the economy.
